Fashion photography is a challenging field to get into, but it's also very rewarding, and the best way to break into the industry is by studying up on some of the most talented fashion photographers out there and seeing how they do what they do.
There are plenty of great books about fashion photography out there like this one, but here's a crash course in five key areas that will help you improve your own work and get noticed for it.
Be A Master Of Your Craft
● Practice a lot, the more you shoot, the better you'll get at it and the best way to practice is by shooting something that interests you: whether that's taking pictures of your friends and family, or doing something more artistic like shooting landscapes or architecture.
● Understand the technical aspects of photography: how your camera works and what makes up a good photo. If you don't know anything about these things yet, then start researching them now! It will help with your confidence when taking photos in front of clients later down the road if they see how knowledgeable and confident someone can be with their craft it shows them that this person knows what she/he is doing.
● Know every part inside out: lenses/filters/tripods etc., so when someone asks for something specific during an assignment like can we use this lens?
You'll know exactly which one they mean without having to ask which one specifically because by then everyone else has moved onto other tasks while waiting around until everyone else does theirs first before moving onto theirs next which leads me onto my next point too.
Be Business Minded
As a Fashion photographer, you'll be responsible for everything from the creative side of things to the financial side of things.
You have to be able to think quickly on your feet and generate ideas that will help you make money, like taking photos at events where people need photographers and then selling those photos afterward .
If someone comes up with an idea for an ad campaign or something else that could generate revenue for both of us, I'm happy to negotiate contracts with them so we both benefit from our collaboration.
Experiment With Different Lenses And Lighting
Different lenses can have a dramatic effect on the way your photos look, so it's important to try out different ones if you want to get really good at photography.
For example, using a wide-angle lens will make everything seem farther away than it actually is and give you more space in the frame.
On the other hand, telephoto lenses compress objects into a smaller area of focus so if you want something to stand out from its surroundings, they're great for that too.
● Experiment with different angles when taking pictures of people or places: low angles make subjects appear larger than life.
● High angles emphasize height differences between objects or subjects within an image; eye level shots are ideal for capturing candid moments that feel natural because viewers feel like they're looking straight at whoever or whatever was photographed
Work With Models, Stylists, Hair And Makeup Artists
They are all people too and deserve to be treated with respect. You need to make sure that the model is comfortable working with you so that he or she feels confident during the shoot.
It's important for them to trust you as well and they should know what is expected of them before stepping in front of your camera lens.
