Have you ever wondered what allows us to have clear and sharp vision? It’s all thanks to a small part of the eye called the Macula of retina (Gula fläcken). Located at the center of your retina, the macula is made up of millions of light-sensitive cells that are responsible for sending signals to your brain so you can see clearly. Let's explore how this amazing part of our eye works!


The macula is an oval shaped area located in the center of your retina. It’s composed of millions of light-sensitive cells known as rods and cones, which are responsible for sensing light and transforming it into electrical signals. These signals are then sent to your brain, where they are interpreted into shapes, colors, and images.


The macula is also responsible for providing us with clear, sharp vision – something we take for granted every day. For example, when we read a book or look at a computer screen, it’s the macula that allows us to focus on the words in front of us without any blurriness or distortion. This ability is called “central vision” and it’s essential for many everyday activities such as driving, reading, or recognizing faces.




The macula also contains special pigments called carotenoids that protect it from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. Without these pigments, UV rays can damage the delicate cells in the macula and cause age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce your risk including eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables (which contain carotenoids) and wearing sunglasses with UV protection whenever you go outside.

Our eyes contain other essential parts that allow us to see clearly, such as the lens and the cornea which help focus light onto the retina in order for us to interpret what we’re looking at. The vitreous humour and aqueous humour also help to maintain pressure and moisture levels within the eye which keep it in top condition and functioning optimally.


Our eyes are a complex system that rely on all its parts working together, so we owe it to ourselves to take proper care of our vision. Wear sunglasses, eat nutrient-rich foods, exercise regularly and have your eyes checked annually with an eye doctor to ensure that your vision is maintained in the long-term. With a little bit of effort and care, we can keep our incredible eyes in top shape!
